Background Coffee exists because of a love affair with coffee that got completely out of hand. For years, it was a passion running quietly in the background. Tasted at weekends, researched on lunch breaks. That obsession grew until it became impossible to ignore. So we did something about it.

We converted a horsebox into a café, found a spot in the grounds of St Paul's Church in Sale and started serving coffee to dog walkers, morning commuters, and anyone who happened to wander past. What started as an escape from a day job became something we believe in completely.

Coffee and a catch up?

The more we thought about coffee, the more we realised it was never really about the coffee.

It's about what happens around it. The conversation that wouldn't have started without a shared cup. The person who comes back every morning not just for the flat white, but because someone there knows their name. The moment you stop rushing and actually talk to the person next to you.

A shared brew can do more for your mental health than you might think. We've seen it. A familiar face at the horsebox window. Five minutes of chat with a stranger on the canal path. Something small that makes a hard day feel a little lighter.

We want Background Coffee to be that place. Not just a place to grab a coffee. A place to land when you need it. You're always welcome here, whatever kind of morning you're having.

But what about the coffee?

Easy tiger. Beneath our love of people and the planet is a deep, nerdy love for taste, quality and flavour.

We source from across the world, and every coffee we choose comes with a background story (hence the name). Where it was grown. Who grew it. What makes it different. Ethical sourcing and full traceability aren't things we shout about as selling points. They should just be standard. We won't stock it if it isn't.
